Instructions for Ordering Scans

HERE'S WHAT WE'LL DO...

We'll scan color images of any covers, postcards or other flat paper items that are listed in our sales and transmit them to you as attachments to an email message. All images will be scanned at 100 DPI/100% (or LESSER DPI and LESSER percent, at your request) and transmitted as "gif" file attachments. At the same time, we will transmit a "carbon copy" of the message and the attachment to our own email address to verify that the transmission was correctly processed by our equipment and our server.

HERE'S WHAT YOU NEED TO DO...

First of all, read this page - right down to the last word. If you request the Cover Scan service, you will be indicating that you have read, understood, and agree to comply with all of the conditions explained here. This page appears only on our internet web site.

Next, verify that your equipment, your server, your browser and your computer programs are all capable of displaying "gif" files that have been attached to email messages. Our server assures us that this is all of the information that you will need in order to determine whether this service will work for you and whether you will be able to view the scans.

Please DO NOT contact us with questions about your equipment, your server, your browser or your computer programs. We are in the postal history business, not the computer business, and we are not qualified to offer any opinions about whether or not this service is going to work for you. Those questions must be directed to computer experts, not postal history dealers.

Once you have determined that you're equipped to use the Cover Scan service, then do the following:

- Make a list of the lots that you want to have scanned.
- Via REGULAR MAIL ONLY, send that list, along with a check or money order for $ 5.00 (U.S.) per each three items to be scanned, and a SELF-ADDRESSED STAMPED ENVELOPE, along with your CORRECT EMAIL ADDRESS, to:

Jim Mehrer
2405-30 th Street
Rock Island, IL 61201 USA

That is:
1 to 3 items: $ 5.00, plus a self-addressed stamped envelope;
4 to 6 items: $10.00, plus a self-addressed stamped envelope;
7 to 9 items: $15.00, plus a self-addressed stamped envelope;
and so on.

DO NOT phone in your request and DO NOT send it via email or fax. USE REGULAR MAIL ONLY. We are unable to bill you for this service, so you must prepay by regular mail.

On receipt of your request and payment, we will scan and send the lots via email, and also send regular photocopies by regular mail, just in case there is a problem with your equipment, service or program that prevents you from receiving the attachment.

IMPORTANT!! READ THIS BEFORE REQUESTING THE SERVICE:

During the closing week of the sale, we may not have time to scan and transmit the Cover Scan images. At our option, we will mail the photocopies only, and refund the difference between the price of the Cover Scan service and our regular photocopy service. Therefore, your self-addressed stamped envelope MIGHT be used to send you a refund of your payment. Be SURE that you include it!

ALSO IMPORTANT!! READ THIS BEFORE REQUESTING THE SERVICE:

We guarantee that we will provide the service that we have described: to scan and transmit the images via email, as well as providing regular photocopies. Once we have transmitted the images to the address that you have provided, and verified delivery on our own system, we cannot guarantee or ensure that any images will be delivered to or interpreted by your equipment. We realize, however, that things can happen in the system (for example, your server shutting down), and we will retransmit the Cover Scans up to two additional times, at your request. Requests for retransmission must be made before the closing time of the sale.

ALSO IMPORTANT!! READ THIS BEFORE REQUESTING THE SERVICE:

You MUST provide your CORRECT EMAIL ADDRESS at the time of your request. If your email address does not accompany the request, or if we find it to be illegible, your payment will be returned in the stamped envelope that you have provided. If your email address is incorrect, we will not be able to transmit. In any case, we are unable to contact you or wait for follow-up information.

AND FINALLY...

If $5.00 per three items seems a little expensive, consider this. We tried a few tests of this service, just to see how long it would take. We selected three random lot numbers, located the lots, started up the scanner and its program, scanned the lots, connected to our internet server, copied and pasted a form-letter into the email form, attached the images, mailed the note, retrieved and viewed our copy of the transmission, photocopied and then refiled the lots. On average, this took 30 to 35 minutes from beginning to end. In other words, we're charging about $10 per hour for this service.
